Preventing String Inverter Fires in Solar PV: Key Insights for Safer Operations

Did you know? String inverters in solar PV systems can pose fire risks if not properly managed. Here’s how to protect your system and reduce fire hazards.

 

 

Key Causes of Inverter Fires

 

 

  1. Poor DC Connections: Loose or oxidizedconnections,mismatched connectors can cause arcing. 

   – Fix: Use compatible connectors, verify crimping, and apply correct torque. 

 

  1. Overheating of Components: Poor ventilation orhigh temperaturescan overheat internal components. 

   – Fix: Install protective roofs, maintain ventilation, and conduct infrared inspections regularly. 

 

  1. DC Arc Faults: Insulation degradation or moisture ingress can lead to dangerous arcs.

   – Fix: Ensure proper insulation, test resistance, and seal against moisture. 

 

  1. Moisture & Dust Ingress: Damaged seals or open doors let moisture and dust in, causing damage.

   – Fix: Check and maintain seals, and clean the equipment regularly. 

 

  1. Improper Installation: Incorrecttorqueing, polarity errors, and unverified settings can trigger fires.

   – Fix: Follow technical checklists and validate configurations before energizing.

Emergency Preparedness: Keep an updated fire risk assessment, and include inverter fire scenarios in your Emergency Response Plan. 

Coordination with Emergency Services: Share site layouts, ensure quick access for responders, and conduct annual emergency drills.
