Regarding the wind turbine itself, the average recyclability for an entire wind turbine (excluding the foundation) is calculated to be around 80 %. This is mainly due to the presence of metal materials.
The remaining 20 % which cannot made of composite materials. Several research programs have been launched to develop economical methods for recycling such materials as they are also found in other major sectors: aeronautical and automotive.
The current solution which has been put in place to recycle blades made with fiberglass, consists of crushing and mixing the fibreglass with other components to create a solid fuel that can be used in the cement industry.
The big challenge for the future will be creating innovative processes to improve the turbine recyclability and thus, leading to a more sustainable industry.
